Overview

SDS PAGE gel electrophoresis separates components of a mixture roughly by molecular weight. Samples are pushed by an applied electric field through a polyacrylamide gel, wherein smaller molecules migrate faster than larger ones. The result is that molecules are separated by species into distinct “bands” whose molecular weights can be compared against a known standard. The presence or absence of bands can indicate the make up of a sample, and the visual sharpness of those bands can indicate the integrity of the corresponding component (e.g., RNA degradation causes smearing in tRNA gels).
